This leads to the formation of more than ten follicular cysts in the ovary every month. This stops the release of the egg leading to anovulation. Symptoms of PCOS include hair loss, obesity, infertility, and others. It can also lead to a change in metabolism, an increased risk of Type-2 diabetes, and other chronic health problems.
PCOS can also manifest in women in different ways, depending on the age and other pre-existing health problems.

What is PCOD?

Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD) is a disorder caused by an imbalance of hormones in the reproductive system. The hormonal imbalance leads to excess secretion of the male hormone. This further leads to irregular periods and delayed egg release, which may also turn into cysts.
Junk food, being overweight, stress, and hormonal disturbances give birth to this condition. Common symptoms of PCOD disease in females are irregular periods, abdominal weight gain, infertility, and male pattern hair loss. The ovaries usually become enlarged in this problem. Hence, they secrete large amounts of androgens that cause havoc with the woman’s fertility and her body.

PCOS vs PCOD – How Are They Different?

Even though both PCOS and PCOD have similar causative factors, there are some major differences between the two. The right kind of diagnosis made at the right time can help attend to the problem. Read along to know about the major differences between the two:

  1. PCOS is an endocrinal problem. It is more serious as compared to PCOD. PCOD largely happens due to hormonal imbalances. While maintaining a balance of the right diet and exercise, both can be reversed.
  2. PCOS has a lower number of patients as compared to PCOD, and it often leads to serious complications. Women who suffer from PCOS are at risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure cardiac-vascular issues, obesity, and even endometrial cancer. While PCOD is more common and almost a third of the women around the world suffer from it.
  3. PCOS is visible early in life, as girls who suffer from it show symptoms of the disease since their teenage years. Acne, excessive hair growth and weight gain are apparent from a younger age due to metabolic disturbances. While PCOD may also be present early in life, but there are no visible symptoms. It is usually discovered incidentally during other health checks when the girl is no more in her teens.
  4. Women who suffer from PCOS struggle with infertility and even have higher rates of miscarriages. Whereas women with PCOD do not have significant fertility issues and with a bit of medical help, they conceive successfully.
  5. Women with PCOD may still possess the hormonal balance and continue to ovulate regularly. Whilst in PCOS, the hormonal balance is distorted which interferes with ovulation. Here, the mechanism is linked to high insulin release that stimulates the production of androgens from the ovary disturbing ovulation.

    My cousin has PCOS, which I had never heard about prior to her being diagnosed. It’s such a tough thing to live with, but it’s good that there are ways of managing the symptoms (to some degree).

    thank you for sharing all of this information about the differences between PCOS and PCOD. To be honest, I had no clue about either but my wife has been struggling in the past few years with small ovarian cysts and is worried about her fertility along with endometriosis or worse cancer. So, I do my dilligence to learn as much as possible to keep her aware and safe.
